Nylon Strings Under Ordinary Conditions

Nylon Strings Under Ordinary Conditions finds Philadelphia musician David Dellacroce — an extraordinarily versatile artist, and quite simply one of my favorite guitarists working today — alone with an acoustic guitar, wandering through a collection of minimal, haunted improvisations where very little needs to happen for an entire landscape to appear. Dellacroce plays with that rare understanding that silence is not the absence surrounding music, but part of its material. Notes emerge tentatively, sometimes almost innocently, and are allowed to hover in the air until their contours begin to blur. Melodies seem to remember themselves only partially. Small gestures become apparitions. The wooden body of the instrument breathes, creaks, resonates — a tiny architecture inhabited by fingers, nylon, memory and empty space. There is melancholy here, certainly, but also candor. A peculiar tenderness. Something approaching saudade, perhaps, although the object of longing remains beautifully unclear. These improvisations seem suspended between remembering and forgetting, between the intimacy of someone playing alone in a room and the strange immensity that can suddenly open inside a handful of notes. The guitar dies very softly in Dellacroce’s hands, only to reappear somewhere inside you — still vibrating, long after the room has gone silent. -Sir Kuliktavikt

Rick Maltese & Friends – Jazz Trio/Quartet Indie/Pop - This is the second album in a series. The first was instrumental with no singing. This album I am the singer and pianist. There was no drummer on the first album. I added Ben Wittman on drums to an excellent band made up of Georger Koller on bass, Bill McBirnie on flute and myself singing and playing piano. Cello Corpse (extended soundtrack)

The corpse was not lying beside the cello. The cello was the corpse. Every bow stroke awakened another forgotten articulation. Joints of wood. Tendons of horsehair. A ribcage resonating with memories that belonged to no human anatomy. Somewhere between chamber music and nightmare, Darryl Blood's Cello Corpse abandons melody in favour of gesture, breath, friction, hesitation. The instrument no longer performs. It remembers. Created as the soundtrack to the surreal short film of the same name, these improvised pieces possess the strange intimacy of overhearing an object think for the first time. Beautiful. Edgar Hurley’s third record, 'Sissy Fairy Faggot Folk Singer', recorded and produced between Demetry Malahoff’s Studio on Camp Mountain in the Samford Valley of QLD and Edgar’s home in Thornbury (Naarm), hails Edgar’s return at their most formidable yet. These are a meticulously realised collection of folk songs delicately crafted by Edgar Hurley and friends that touch on collective personal tales and social commentaries on the complexities and the sometimes horrifying realities of living with a chronic illness, depression, poverty, social oppression and constantly regulated and scrutinised sexuality, to wrestling with their own liberations and freedoms from the chains of societal expectations, and how to survive in a dangerous and visceral world that has built its systems to keep people like Edgar - a non-binary, non-conforming, queer writer, creative and sex worker - down and out. We explore how shedding from these social and societal restrictions can be both devastating for industry and industrial growth, but also devastatingly freeing for the spirit.

Have Arms, Will Hug

Edgar Hurley’s new collection of songs comes in the form of sophomore LP 'Have Arms Will Hug'. Written, recorded and produced by Edgar throughout 2021 and ‘22 at home with a simple microphone array, nylon guitar, keyboard and various other instruments found around the house. The record is an otherwise experimental folk album, standing with the maturity of a solo artist exploring the employment of self-production, woven with a complex simplicity through a decidedly fabled collection of tricks old and new, lightly touching topics of discernment like running away, living with a chronic illness, harbouring inadequacy, losing friends, and wanting to be in love again.

The Blame Needs a Place

Under the Edgar Hurley moniker, Jordan Wearn creates delicate yet complex compositions elevated by a lyrically-driven delivery with an unassuming, intimate landing. The album was made slowly. Quickly. At a medium pace. Stitched together the very same way. It started with Jordan sitting in front of two vocal microphones with his classic nylon in the studio (a lovely retreat in Camp Valley) and playing a song for Demetry Malahoff (producer, band friend, engineer). From there onwards, partnered alongside Demetry, the two would sit and construct and build a more rounded “song” around those live recordings. Mostly withholding and keeping in the natural room sounds of the cabin-esque studio and the mountain valley that surrounded it. Dogs. Birds. A train. Some sounds you can hear but can’t quite make out. Though you’ll know they are there. The record was then sent to Melbourne to be mastered by Jessi Lumbar (Blisstake / Sex on Toast) . The songs featuring on this record are extracts taken from Edgar Hurley’s book of poetry ‘You Gave Me A Lily and Now It’s A Field’ and past journal entries from the space between 2017-2021. Primarily a folk record, ‘The Blame Needs A Place’ takes many forms and characters during its run time. Showcasing the vast range and playfulness in emotions displayed from the most despairing to the very most uplifting.
