Best known for his guitar work as Remora & electro-acoustic drones in Small Life Form, we’re pleased to present the reissue of Brian John Mitchell’s first release under his own name, four and a half. It’s a drone piece 4.5 hour long that he recorded from 2006-2012 revisited & remastered in 2026. Somewhere between the soothing sounds of the medical machinery keeping you alive & the industrial sounds of the first half of a shift at a factory, the piece is about the way we experience sound today & the musicality of noise. Originally inspired by Mitchell’s routine of taping down keyboard notes to make drones to fall asleep to & a time constraint of the music software of the era, this is a piece of sound more than a piece of music. Fall asleep with us to enter a world of deadly decaying dreams.

Small Life Form started in 1998 as an experiment towards sound manipulation & attempts to recreate the styles of Gyorgy Ligeti & George Crumb. Starting off as a computer oriented manipulation in sound, 2003 marked a change from sounds created in a box to creating the sounds in the real air using effect pedals, microphones, & predominantly horns & organs for the debut album One. 2007 marked Small Life Form’s live debut & over the next year the style refined, abandoning real horns for a piece of copper pipe, replacing organs with melodica, & vocals with feedback manipulation. Alive is collected from two live recordings in 2008. They are massive structures built from scratch using a loop pedal, distortion pedals, & reverb units. Sit back & relax whether you think Small Life Form is the soundtrack to a world tearing apart or one that’s just forming. Menacing & soothing enough to hold you over.

Back in 2008 I got a residency to record in an abandoned nuclear cooling tower. It was fun. I flew across the country & hung out with good friends I hardly ever see. I borrowed Shane DeLeon's guitar & tiny amp & his wife's watering can & my friend Marlene drove me up from Portland to Satsop to record. I had the space for 4 hours & I made my recordings. I flew back home & built the recordings into these pieces. They played at some art galleries in Seattle put on by the grantor organization Environmental Aesthetics. A couple years later Shaun Sandor asked about releasing them on Blondena. Now here they are as part of the Silber library. If you dig it please spread the word & leave a review.

From 2000-2002 I followed my interest in 1960s composition more seriously. I lived in a town with a music program at the university & I would regularly drop in to classes while I wasn't even a student at the school. It was a more relaxed time. I would go to the basement library of the music building & listen to out of print Ligeti & Copland records. The highest culmination of it all was spending a morning with George Crumb as he critiqued a handful of graduate students pieces. I would go to the rundown theater named after a racist former governor & listen to the student orchestra tune & play. I recorded some of the warm ups on a cassette recorder & transferred them to my computer where they sat for over 20 years. I found them on a hard drive recently & they were the perfect source for the kind of sounds Small Life Form makes today. A collaboration with a younger version of myself & a hundred strangers on a stage. Drone on!

Ambient Drones for One Guitar

The fifth cassette from Remora in the 1990s. I was really proud of this collection of guitar experiments at the time & still am. Originally a 90 minute cassette with 3 long pieces on one side & 10 shorter pieces on the other. When CD-Rs came around it expanded to over two hours with the out takes. A snapshot of my bedroom every single night during this period of my life.

When Metal Sleeps - The Coma Remixes

Essentially the day Small Life Form's When Metal Sleeps came out, Scott Lawlor said, "This is a great album! Do you mind if I do some remixes?" I was flattered & assumed it was the kind of comment people make & never comes to fruition. A week later he sent me this massive beast re-working nearly the entire album into an even bigger monster than it started as. Slowed down & stretched out from 80 minutes to almost 12 hours. This is ambient music for deserted spaces.

In 2020 I invested my life savings to open a coffee shop & event space in an attempt to shape the town I was living in into a town I wanted to live in. It was hard. It was rewarding. It was unsustainable. Admitting it was hard. A couple weeks before closing a regular asked what I was going to do next & I said I didn't know. He said he could get me a job he thought I'd like in an iron foundry. He was right. The job was perfect for where I was at mentally. Physically grueling. Physically challenging. Actually dangerous enough to make me appreciate being alive. Another friend of mine used to call me every week saying I was a prisoner & I had to get out of there. I told him I would be happy to stop shoveling sand out of tunnels & burning myself if he could find a job that paid me better & he never could. Eventually I did find something that paid better - a desk jockey job not really fitting to who I see myself as, but probably better suited to what I actually am... a 50 year-old father & husband. When Metal Sleeps documents my two years in the foundry. The anger & resentment I had from a failed dream sculpting the sounds of my daily life into industrial ambient soundscapes. Ominous & frightening & soothing. This is not music for everyone. An argument could be made it isn't even music at all. This is Small Life Form.

I Promise I Will Betray You

A wall of drone from Small Life Form. Intended use: drive away emotional monsters. Like a lot of my work I Promise I Will Betray You is about several ideas colliding. A friend of mine was talking about wanting to cover some metal songs on bagpipes. A couple days later I noticed a bagpipe setting on a synth I usually use for the "Blade Runner" sound & I came up with a chord structure I liked as a starting point for manipulation. While I was working on the piece we had the listening party for Droneuary 2026 & someone griped the music wasn't droney enough, which pushed me towards making things more static slab than I originally foresaw. At one of my dayjobs (because who can survive on just one?) I got assigned some binaural soundbath videos for review that felt like the world confirming things. This is what I spent most of my 20s listening to while I fell asleep, simple & dense drones to drive thoughts away & awaken some forgotten truth; but I was never confident enough in the work to release it. It's been decades, but I Promise I Will Betray You.

One Remixed

Back in 2000 Brian John Mitchell started working on a new Small Life Form piece that would go on to become the album One (released in 2003). Fueled by a steady diet of Gyorgy Ligeti & George Crumb along with Origami Republika, Swans, Lycia, Joy Division, & The Velvet Underground for a more aggressive take on ambient music & composition than most. Originally filling all the channels of a Fostex Digital 8 Track (7 mono channels & one channel for room reverb re-amping), when mixing Mitchell fell in love with the individual tracks & decided to separate them into an album with the idea people could recreate the original piece on their own if desired. 25 years later, here we are with a collection of over 5 hours of remixes varying from aggressive ambient to dance music, folks following the original vision of experimentation & making sound their own. Drone on!

Thirty-some years ago when I was first learning about the roots of a lot of the industrial, goth, post punk, no wave, & experimental music I discovered the 1960s classical composers who bowed piano strings, manipulated audio tape, used metronomes as instruments, & created soundscapes rather than melodies. Ligeti, Crumb, Cage, Stockhausen, Riley, Copland, the list goes on forever. In a pre-internet world where record stores were dominated by indie rock, finding the music was difficult with a lot of reading books from the library describing the compositions & how traditions & norms were being broken making imaginings of the music in my head that often had little to do with the music when I would actually hear it years later. I did eventually find a store that specialized in classical music & the owner spent time with me pointing me in the direction I was seeking & seemed genuinely excited to have someone to talk to about Ligeti, but of course they closed one day & I have yet to find someone with his depth of knowledge without pretension. At any rate a few years later I started Small Life Form to experiment with sound in the ways I thought appropriate to my materials at hand as I knew I would never have the discipline to end up in a space to write for an orchestra. Now feeling full circle I find myself listening to a classical station on the radio that fades in & out of range & recording snippets on my phone to make loops to stretch & reverse & reverberate & distort. It makes me feel young again. A savage need to explore sound in a way that doesn't use the tricks & clichés I've developed over 30 years while still being influenced by them. Collaborations with composers dead centuries before I was born. This is Small Life Form in the fall of 2025.
