Álvaro Domene RAPID INFLUX

"Rapid Influx is as if Autechre commandeered Botch and forced Dave Knudson to make a jazz record. Needless to say, no one else is making music like this." - Ian Chainey (Stereogum). "A wild and busy foray into a shattered, abstracted world, the listener is freely propelled through IDM, technical death metal guitar, glitching loops and icy computer noise. This is music to listen THRU as much as it is to listen to. Kingston-based artist Álvaro Domene is one of the most inventive and hyper-productive guitarist-composers in the world. With each addition to his discography, his methods and sounds have evolved exponentially into ever more nuanced aggressive visions which are realized in the form of sweeping and vast musical landscapes. Every second of every piece on Rapid Influx feels like another massive bomb detonating. The sound of the tracks here (and on other releases) is that of fractured sonic debris whizzing past your ears from every direction. Think Venetian Snares meets Atheist but about 100x more intense and you get somewhat of an idea of the character of Rapid Influx. It's an overwhelming but highly rewarding experience to these ears at least! I'm giddy every time Álvaro shares something new with the world and enjoy having my head smashed by their brilliance like one of Gallagher's unfortunate watermelons. Furthermore, the label he uses to release items - Iluso Records - has an impressive roster of likeminded incendiary artists that includes Henry Kaiser, Harvey Valdes, Álvaro Perez, Briggan Krauss and Colin Marston to name a few. If anyone is wondering, my favorite of the seven tracks here is "Shaken Out of Lethargy" which could nearly sum up the experience of encountering any of Álvaro's recent work." "ADAPAR, the duo of multi-instrumentalist Álvaro Domene and saxophonist Álvaro Pérez, feels so far ahead of the rest of modern music, like a peek through a tear in the space-time continuum, a demented dimension where Autechre, John Zorn, and Fredrik Thordendal are united by breakcore. Weasel Walter, no stranger to using the fringe of music as a bungee rope, called it a "disorienting duet of fractured fax-machine glitch-babble," and, really, who am I to argue with Weasel Walter? Longtime readers know I'm a Domene disciple, so you cannot quarrel with me when I call 3: Öpik Transmission that good, good stuff. Like past works, it's a lot, often all at the same time; thus, begone, normal people. You bet, this thing will shed your tin-eared, fairweather friends faster than a shaggy husky brushing past your black pants. Some folks aren't ready for the future. That said, there's something so now about what ADAPAR has achieved. Check out "The Value Of Vision." Squiggly information eternally pours out of a spigot that can't be turned off, and then, beneath the noise, big, foreboding guitar chugs rumble like thunder on the horizon. The related sets are named quite literally, letting metal, jazz, and electronic elements, among other touchstones, smash together like particle beams in an accelerator. What’s produced can be quite contradictory and even disarmingly alien. Take “Fierce Universalism,” Collisions’ opener. With its body-blow beats, skittering solos, and metallic chugs, it’s like a computer trying to recover a Blotted Science song lost on a severely fragmented drive. However, unlike some self-consciously experimental releases that come off as a skunkworks produced solely for other musicians, Collisions and Contradictions have something else swimming around in the soup of the neat noises. In a sense, it’s the trademark touch of all of Domene’s releases: These songs are teeming with life, imbued with the human experience. They’re less a didactic exercise in theoretical possibilities and more like someone showing you the inner workings of their mind." - Stereogum

Across eight tracks, the duo unleashes a high-octane barrage of hyper-speed, hocket-driven cyber-techno-jazz-glitch-core inspired by the current surveillance ecocidal tech-feudalist times, thematically moving from sociopolitical rupture, through de(con)struction and crisis before ultimately arriving at well-needed re-construction. Pérez is here at the top of his already inspiring game, displaying breathtaking flow, refinement and sustained energy on tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones, while Domene [featured exclusively on drum synthesizer-sampler for the first time], propels and anchors the apparent chaos deploying glitch nets and carefully timed explosions through which Pérez flies at neck breaking speeds.

Álvaro Domene DARVO MACHINÆ I

Álvaro Domene's work is music's future rendered in the present. The first installment of DARVO Machinæ, the New York-by-way-of-Madrid composer's newest work of guitar innovation, is all the artist's paths converging into one album. In a way, it's like a lifelong explorer unveiling the full map of their travels, showing how yesterday's experiences can guide tomorrow's. What immediately stands out about DARVO Machinæ is not its aural adventurousness, but how Domene eases the listener into its unique language. "Spectral Cartographies," with its skittering IDM beats and fuzzy click & cuts atmospherics, is the album's Rosetta Stone, building fluency slowly. By the time Domene starts soloing with the fluidity of a musical notation of Brownian motion, and the beats take off with breakcore intensity, you already have the whole picture. This understanding makes the music even more bracing, in the same way that background know-how enlivens sporting events, or an expanded vocabulary enriches conversations. DARVO Machinæ is a music empath in that way, because it can soak up whatever is on your mind. Like all music worth its salt, Darvo Machinæ is you. What is HARDWIRED? The idea: harness the energy of performing with hardware synths primarily in breakcore/IDM/noise. Artists were encouraged to submit single-take live recordings. The goal was to embrace the raw sound and unpredictability that comes with working directly with machines/hardware.
