New Sincerity

“What passes for hip cynical transcendence of sentiment is really some kind of fear of being really human, since to be really human [...] is probably to be unavoidably sentimental and naïve and goo-prone and generally pathetic.” The sentence above may be the single most important passage for us in the entire New Sincerity movement. David Foster Wallace, author of Infinite Jest, is responsible for the dominant interpretation of this phenomenon. His writing confronts the attitudes of the modernists who, Wallace argued, were obsessed with creating new aesthetics and formal innovations. Modernist novels were judged primarily by their formal ingenuity, resulting in a relentless pursuit of originality; their authors were marked by a pathological self-consciousness, and their works by a kind of textual vertigo. Wallace argued that artists should dare to risk being considered naïve in order to repair what cynicism, irony, and even post-irony have destroyed in culture. In the mid-1990s and early 2000s, he drew attention to the dangers of the post-sarcasm present in television advertising, criticized the excess of symbols and “images ready for passive consumption” in the world around us, and observed how phrases were being displaced by emoticons. All these forces shaping the consciousness of the time led to deepening alienation and intellectual shallowness. We are a band that experiments boldly with sound, though in this field, too, we have learned something from New Sincerity: musical arrangements are decisions, and the use of particular tools inevitably goes hand in hand with shifts in meaning. As befits a band with such a name, we adhere to a Beckettian principle: “no symbols where none were intended.” We have limited our palette of post-production gimmicks in favour of clarity, while in the songwriting itself we have looked more kindly upon symmetry and conventional verse structures. CECILIA sings in English, French and Italian, over a background of synth drones, hand percussion, electronic textures and strings, calling to an omnipresent yet elusive love, binding, repelling, fragile, transient, spiritual.

"of Children and Their Sorceries" sees Black Leather Birds continuing its exploration of immersive, world-building music where spoken word, experimental rock, ambient sound design, and ritual chant coexist. Across five tracks, the EP examines anxiety, memory, home, and the strange significance that ordinary objects can accumulate over a lifetime. Literary in both tone and structure, its songs unfold less as narratives than as inhabited spaces -- places where tension, nostalgia, grief, and acceptance are allowed to linger and intermingle.

A 7-track album (tracks 2+3 and 7+8 are one song split) that is my biggest and most ambitious project yet. Across nearly 2 hours, the album blends a lot of genres I enjoy, most notably being Post-Rock, with some noisy stuff, some Post-Punk influence, and some ambient influence as well.

I Want To Fly The Plane

This is the debut self-produced EP from post-rock/math-rock project Let It Eat You For Fun. Inspired by bands such as And So I Watch You From Afar, Foals, Giraffes? Giraffes!, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, toe, and more. This project blends elements of post-rock and math-rock with delayed guitars, pitch-shifted riffs, and booming bass that peaks and flows into an epic crescendo. It's a project I've always wanted to work on but never had the gear to do so. Now with the stuff at my disposal I'm able to sit and tremolo pick until the sun does down, and I do--a lot.

Reissue of Boston quartet's debut that received comparisons to Belly and Sonic Youth. Originally released in 1996 via Castle Von Buhler label.
