Nylon Strings Under Ordinary Conditions finds Philadelphia musician David Dellacroce — an extraordinarily versatile artist, and quite simply one of my favorite guitarists working today — alone with an acoustic guitar, wandering through a collection of minimal, haunted improvisations where very little needs to happen for an entire landscape to appear. Dellacroce plays with that rare understanding that silence is not the absence surrounding music, but part of its material. Notes emerge tentatively, sometimes almost innocently, and are allowed to hover in the air until their contours begin to blur. Melodies seem to remember themselves only partially. Small gestures become apparitions. The wooden body of the instrument breathes, creaks, resonates — a tiny architecture inhabited by fingers, nylon, memory and empty space. There is melancholy here, certainly, but also candor. A peculiar tenderness. Something approaching saudade, perhaps, although the object of longing remains beautifully unclear. These improvisations seem suspended between remembering and forgetting, between the intimacy of someone playing alone in a room and the strange immensity that can suddenly open inside a handful of notes. he first album "Waiting for Rosetta" was released in September 2019. "Rosetta" is a journey through the solar system you could listen to when lying outside and staring at the sky while listening. Rosetta begins with Komarov's Prayer. After that, we wait for Rosetta probe to travel in space. From there, we move on to the icy surfaces of Jupiter's moon Europa. "Voyage" depicts the feeling of travelling in relatively empty space, full of anticipation, distress and homesickness. Too long in space can also lead to insanity and the album continues with the slightly more action-packed Space Madness song inspired by Ren & Stimpy. Madness leads to mystic and slightly oriental atmosphere of Saturnalia somewhere in Saturn's orbit. Oumuamua's long trek through the solar system completes the release.
In 2010 QRD started a series of interviews with guitar players after spending two years coming up with 58 questions about approaches & techniques of playing, & since it's QRD all the guitarists were a bit out of the mainstream. After ten sets of interviews it was time to bundle everything together & ask the guitarists if they had some sound to contribute. So we ended up with something pretty massive. 54 tracks of guitarists pushing their instruments & rigs. A 50+ page digital booklet. A 2388 page ebook of interviews with guitarists. I like to think I went all out on this. I feel like there’s no justice in mentioning individual contributors & barely even genres. The pieces flow from ambient to folk to drone to jazz to metal to noise & back around several times in its nearly 4 hour run time. So sit back & relax & drone out & bliss out & freak out a good chunk of your day away.
