This 3½-hour track, originally recorded in 2011, came about by happy accident. It was my first experiment with the Paulstretch program after seeing the then-popular trend of slowing songs down by 800%. I chose to process Merzbow’s Tint 1, not realizing it would ultimately stretch into something this long. As I began listening more deeply to the result, I decided to divide the piece into four movements, gradually shaping it with subtle additional layers and gently sweeping the volume in and out. The title is a direct nod to John Cage’s iconic 4′33″. At the time, I was listening heavily to Cage, as well as Bernhard Günter, Christopher DeLaurenti—particularly his Perforate Silence album—and other isolationist and minimalist composers.
