kansha 感謝 is a collective that brings together Brisbane’s finest improvising creatives intent on exploring musical ideas based on connection, gratitude and community. Together they create colourful musical worlds through the exploration and deconstruction of repertoire created collaboratively by the group. This recording brings you into the kansha sessions, where once a month we invite the community to share in this creative experience for a morning full of sounds from all areas of the improvised music spectrum. The beauty of these sessions come from the wide variety of creatives that make up the collective, from straight ahead jazz musicians to electronic artists and everywhere in between. These are creatives sharing what they love, in a space they love, with the community they love.

Travis Jenkins Piano Trio

Multi-instrumentalist Travis Jenkins is a prolific composer and venturesome improviser. After taking some time to explore the classic organ trio sound through the making of 'A Turtles Dream in Outer Space' (on guitar), he returned to the piano trio format with himself at the keys for this date at JMI Live. Inspired by the music of jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, the Travis Jenkins Piano Trio explored a repertoire consisting of predominantly contemporary popular song as templates for improvisation, including arrangements and explorations of well known songs from artists such as The Stranglers, Nick Drake, Radiohead and Black Sabbath, as well as an original from Travis’s 'Pieces for Glass Houses: Portrait of a River City' album.

Brodie McAllister’s Wattle

‘Wattle' is a large ensemble work by Brodie McAllister, formed in the spirit of communal music-making and built upon the language developed within previous ensembles DÜT (McAllister/Rogers/Saragossi) and the Hill/McAllister/Perkins Trio. The music here (both composed and improvised) ranges from the beautiful to the ugly, and everything in between. ‘Wattle' is a modest exploration of uncharted sonic terrain, inspired by explorations of nature and place while attempting to reconcile jazz traditions with contemporary classical experimentations. Embrace the unassuming journey, in testament to artistic collaboration and a sincere attempt to converge with sound and texture in a language uniquely its own.
