Mind Set
It is always a renewed pleasure to immerse oneself in the diaphanous work of Australian artist Michael Baum, our resident and undisputed master of minimal ambient drone. His new EP, Mind Set, unfolds across three tracks, each imbued with that singular, intoxicating brilliance that has become his signature.
From the very first second, Baum’s sonic palette is unmistakable, even as he leads us into different, uncharted territories with each offering. Perception may drift and diverge from listener to listener, but in my case, I find myself pleasantly lost in a mystic conifer forest, suspended somewhere beyond Earth—perhaps on Gliese 832 c—where estrangement is the natural climate of things.
A forest bordering a vast lake, its surface veiled in phantom mist. That euphoric sensation, both comforting and quietly unsettling, of dissolving entirely into a soundfield that feeds upon itself, reverberating through body and landscape alike—through water, stone, air, and thought.
A world-music of immemorial time.
