Electronic Sound Review August 2026 by BMW Edinburgh’s The Earl Of Dean has been incredibly prolific since the release of his debut long-player. This – his third album in a year – picks up from its predecessor’s uneasy ambient sound palette, offering six more slices of feverish texture and spaceship drone to soundtrack some particularly vivid nightmares. Detaching itself almost entirely from rhythm, save for ‘Erosion Of Our Inner Circle’ and its dub-infested chirrups and percolations, ‘Above The Clouds We Shall Rest’ instead homes in on The Earl’s tape-delay wizardry. ‘Beyond The Pillars Of Hercules’ and ‘Together We Shall Become Dust’ craft wormholes of sound from simple noise loops, each faded echo more defeated as they’re subsumed by the mono-tonal maw quaking beneath. Conversely, ‘The Line Of Equidistance’ coagulates into almost-beauty, as leaking saw waves pool into glossy chords. While it may be too queasy to be necessarily restful, this album is certainly as spontaneously nimbus as its title suggests.
