Felix Mendelssohn’s two piano trios stand among the most refined achievements of early Romantic chamber music, representing not only a culmination of Classical formal discipline but also a profound expansion of expressive and pianistic possibilities. The recordings made in November 1997 by the Adatara Piano Trio—violinist Takashi Munakata, cellist Daisuke Sato, and pianist Roberto Maxwell—capture these works in an intimate acoustic ideally suited to their intricate balance of lyricism, structural clarity, and emotional intensity. The recording room of the Koriyama City Museum of Art, with its transparent yet warm resonance, allows the contrapuntal interplay and tonal nuance of Mendelssohn’s writing to emerge with exceptional clarity.
