rhubiqs
I first encountered Tom Squires thanks to an introduction from my great friend Tom Honey of Good Weather for an Airstrike. Our June 2025 event at Servant Jazz Quarters in Dalston needed another artist, and Tom H recommended rhubiqs. I’m grateful he did. Although GWFAA were ultimately unable to appear due to illness, my band Minus Pilots, Mark Beazley’s legendary Rothko, and rhubiqs went ahead with the evening, which turned out to be an extraordinary, unforgettable night. rhubiqs’ work—cinematic, drone-inflected, electronic neo-classical experiments—was spellbinding, enveloping the audience with a remarkable clarity and intensity that lingered long after the performance ended.
The idea for a rhubiqs 7-inch release emerged later in the year. During the Christmas period, Tom S reflected publicly on his favourite concerts, recordings, and moments of 2025, prompting a return to memories of the Dalston performance. I contacted Tom to propose a 7-inch on Skew Note, and he kindly agreed. A series of exchanges followed, shaping the recordings presented here.
These works reflect the same measured intensity, cinematic sweep, and contemplative resonance that first drew me to rhubiqs’ music. This release stands as a small archival document of that memorable night—an attempt to carry forward its spirit and preserve it in a lasting form.
