Occasionally sawing, occasionally seeing, always sound. Project by Toby Kaufmann-Buhler
Sawing Sound
Juniper II is a collaborative expression from Hendrix Gullixson and Sawing Sound (Toby Kaufmann-Buhler). Three sibling pieces reflect the very best from these artists. Sweeping layers of processed instrumentation and dense soundscapes carry the listener through each unique song. Juniper II was written between early summer and late fall of 2025. Cover artwork designed by Aedric Donavan; released on Somnimage in December 2025.

In the middle of 2022, Toby visited Kolmar Park for the first time, after discovering that it was set to be re-dedicated by the city of Chicago in the name of German poet Gertrud Kolmar (1894-1943). There he made field recordings of the place, without a real sense of how they could be used in the future. Two years later Toby and Wayne began collaborating on an approach to this material together with Wayne’s instrumentation; during this time and with the encouragement of Zach Frizzell, they expanded the project’s scope to other material. This included field recordings made in more disparate locations, tied together by Wayne’s approach with the guitar. “I remained a stranger to the birds” is part of a line from Kolmar’s poem “You”. released by Somnimage, March 28, 2025 Wayne Robert Thomas -- electric guitar, processing and effects Recorded at home in Fairland (IN, usa) Toby Kaufmann-Buhler -- field recordings, editing and mixing Field recordings made in Chicago (IL, usa), Porto (Portugal), Lafayette (IN, usa) Track 1 made in memory of Gertrud Kolmar (1894-1943)

This is a set of hybrid forms, bringing together field recordings I've made during the past 20 years and the saw (which I have been making/mangling sound with for the past 13 years). Each of the field recordings are from either the recent or distant past, and represent places I've felt close to, for obviously disparate reasons. Still, there are connections between them (whether personal or superficial), and I tried to draw them all together with the saw. Thank you for listening. released March 25, 2020 Field recordings, saw and production: Toby Kaufmann-Buhler Shortwave radio, chatter, space exploration on Field 3: Ian V. Rywalt & Lance Robson
