Gix - Groove For Soul EP

Rhythmic Steps returns with its 30th release, welcoming Gix for his second outing on the label. Across these five tracks, he shows a few different sides of his sound without overexplaining anything. Gix's world has a very specific character, small sounds, little shifts, strange details that somehow hit deeper than they should. Sometimes it is just one tone or one tiny movement in the track that catches you and stays there. The grooves are direct and easy to get lost in, but there is always something personal underneath. Each track works on its own, but together they make a tight, honest selection that feels very much like Gix. Enjoy 🔮

This record was recorded live with a lo fi mic. No midi, no masters. So this was an attempt to combine the sound I worked out on the last album Cyprian's Gnome with some of the more technical aspects that I had messed with on another record Umber Hulk Song. For the title track I was attempting to fuse this kind of alien dungeon noise with influences from Demilich, Frank Zappa, and Sun Ra. So this involved some really weird and unstable noise generator settings, but I'm all about imperfections. The track Smokeless Fire is of course influenced by Hindustani music, but if you know anything about Indian music you'll know this is not a raga. So I was also influenced by Scottish Piobaireachd bagpipe music here. When I first started listening to it my thought was something like, what if someone mixed this with Indian music in some way shape or form. That might not make a lot sense, and mixing it further with noise oriented dungeon synth might make even less sense. But here we are. -Ranseur

Michael Baum returns to ECHØVEIL with Be Still For Certainty, another absolutely gorgeous descent into the slow, suspended nowhere of minimal ambient drone. A music dwelling at the thin border between worlds. Long tones breathe, hover, erode. Vast layers of sound remain almost impossibly still while, somewhere inside them, strange little keyboard apparitions begin to flicker — schizoïd constellations, crooked interstellar lights, fragments of some obsolete celestial machinery briefly awakening in the fog. There is something deeply peaceful here, but never entirely reassuring. The music floats in that peculiar region where serenity becomes alien, where repetition slowly alters the architecture of perception and where a single sustained frequency can suddenly feel larger than the room, larger than the night, perhaps larger than whatever world we accidentally woke up inside. Ghosts of Eliane Radigue, Steve Roach, Roland Kayn, Abul Mogard and Kyle Bobby Dunn may occasionally drift through these immense spaces, but Baum follows his own quiet trajectory toward something increasingly distant, abstract and beautifully unplaceable. -Sir Kuliktavikt

Six pieces of in-between-worlds ambient music — mottled, elusive, quietly spellbinding. Six miniature worlds that sometimes feel like the tribal music of a people from a country that never existed, somewhere deep inside an impossible jungle where mist has seeped into every pore of the universe. Fourth-world percussion flickers through the undergrowth. Occult little ascensions emerge and disappear. Miraculous chiaroscuro, gentle vertigo, strange pockets of playfulness dissolving into nocturnal torpor... Everything seems alive in some discreet, half-conscious way, yet nothing ever reveals itself completely. And perhaps that is what makes not afraid to die (no) so singular: Spycker’s wonderfully peculiar sonic palette, handled with immense sensitivity and, above all, restraint. Nothing is overstated. Void Sublimation is a five-track techno journey into fractured frequencies, industrial darkness and hypnotic transcendence, curated by Krank’m’Haus Records. Framed by artwork evoking a collapsing satellite lost in a black starfield, the EP captures the point where chaos transforms into elevation. The international lineup brings five distinct visions of underground techno. Ukrainian artist Stanislav Tolkachev opens with modular-driven psychedelia and cosmic abstraction, dissolving conventional structures into pulsating waves of analogue hypnosis. Spain’s Linear System follows with deep, immersive pressure, layering shadow-heavy textures and evolving rhythms into a state of mechanical meditation.Germany’s Duniz delivers a fierce, cinematic take on modern techno, combining dense percussion, powerful low-end movement and intricate sonic detail. Stripped of ornament, the EP rebuilds techno through pressure, texture and emotional force: a soundtrack for sleepless warehouse rituals, abandoned megastructures and infinite inner space.
