Russian Subterranean Doom Metal

Recently there has been a number of different doom metal compilations representing the post-soviet doom metal scene. Yet our compilation was put together with a different and original concept. The idea was to showcase both post-soviet undergound doom metal, bands that borderline doom as well as to present some heavy doom-metal tracks of non-doom bands. That is why it has not only doom-metal acts but some doomy tracks by the bands from outside the doom scene. We have a number of well established old bands like Crunch, Catharsis and even Vinny Appice (BLACK SABBATH, DIO) has recorded drums in to the song 'When The Devil Comes' by Stonehand (Russia). At the same time our compilation introduces many bands from the extreme underground to the listener. Most of them have an outside-of the box approach to songwriting and production.

This was intended to be a more 'straight forward' metal and rock collection, but, nothing wrong with going in some unexpected directions at times too! 26 bands/projects, 14 countries (England, Czech, Netherlands, Scotland, Switzerland, Spain, Canada, Wales, Chile, Croatia, America, Sweden, Argentina & Germany). Thank you to everyone who contributed to this one. Another one I am really pleased with, especially in that it has variety, but fits together well, and I discovered some new names along the way too, I hope you (in the bands and those finding this as a listener) will do too. The 100th Owlripper (released December 20, 2023) was a biggie; FFO doom, sludge, psychedelic, stoner, grunge, rock & metal, Yob, Monolord, Elephant Tree, Alice In Chains, Windhand, Ufomammut and the like. It is a fantastic honour to release through Owlripper this wonderfully epic, immersive piece of atmospheric and psychedelic doom by Uncle Woe, a two piece studio project based in Ontario, Canada and Melbourne, Australia. They specialise in big songs, heavily hypnotic riffs and progressions, in-depth story telling and sublime artwork to wrap their releases inside, and in the case of 'Well', it is no different. There is a stunning animated video to accompany the anthemic title track (which is included in the download here as well). Oh, this is the good stuff. The kind that pulls you into that special place where pain and joy collapse into one. Experimental DooooOOOOOooooooOOOOOm-drone metal of the highest caliber. The material here is viscous. Doom stretched past genre into substance. Notes do not begin or end; they secrete. Feedback flows like sap from a wounded amplifier: slow, adhesive, almost tender. One does not listen. One is coated. Voluptuous languor. Ecstatic suffering. A euphoria that does not rise but sinks, deeper, warmer, more irreversible. Psychedelia without color, or rather: color seen through closed eyelids, pulsing in red-black tides. Comparative structures (approximate, unstable): Sunn O))) — amplification as monolith, but here softened, made febrile. Cathedral — ritual heaviness, re-liquefied. Eyehategod — filth transmuted into narcotic clarity. Om — repetition as prayer, the deity absent. Kyuss — desert heat, slowed until it congeals. Boris — mutation, continuous, cellular. Earth — time flattened into a horizon. Corrupted — despair architected in low frequencies. Electric Wizard — intoxication ritualized, thickened. Melvins (Lysol phase) — abrasion as texture. Sleep (Jerusalem) — pilgrimage extended beyond destination. But this is not synthesis. It is pressure convergence. A storm slowed to near immobility: psychedelic hail suspended mid-fall, each fragment humming.
